The main difference between external and internal brake shafts is the arrangement of the brake drums (or discs) and the braking mechanism, which directly affects their ease of maintenance, heat dissipation and overall design flexibility. Below are some key differences between the two:
1. Location of brake components:
Outer brake axle: Their brake drums or discs and associated brake shoes or calipers are mounted on the outside of the axle, directly attached to or near the center of the wheel. This design makes the brake components more visible for inspection and maintenance.
Integrated Brake Axle: The brake components are integrated inside the axle, which usually means that the brake drum or disc and brake mechanism are located inside the axle tube and are relatively hidden.
2. Easy maintenance:
The open nature of the external design makes it quick and easy to replace brake shoes, check for wear or clean, reducing vehicle downtime and maintenance costs; whereas the integrated design can require more disassembly work to access brake components, making maintenance relatively cumbersome and time-consuming.
3. Heat dissipation performance:
The external brake axle, with its exposed brake components, promotes more air circulation, which helps to quickly dissipate the heat generated during braking and reduces the loss of braking efficiency caused by overheating. Built-in brake shafts have relatively low heat dissipation efficiency and may be at greater risk of thermal degradation, especially during continuous heavy loads or long periods of downhill driving.
4. Design and application flexibility:
The exterior design allows greater flexibility in adjusting the wheelbase and installing advanced braking systems, such as ABS, depending on vehicle requirements, making it more adaptable. While built-in designs may be more compact in terms of space occupation, they may not be as flexible as external designs in terms of specific customisation requirements.
5. Durability and resilience:
In certain specific applications, especially in extreme conditions, embedded shafts are often considered to have greater overall strength and durability due to their structural characteristics. However, this does not mean that external designs are inferior in terms of durability; they simply have different design priorities.
In summary, both externally braked and internally braked axles have advantages, and the choice depends on the specific operating environment of the vehicle, maintenance accessibility requirements and the manufacturer's design preferences.
